Easy and fast play dough recipe

With the wet and cold weather setting in now, we all need to find ways to keep our little one's entertained indoors. I have always found that play dough is a great way to keep my 3 children entertained; it's also a nice calm activity which really brings their creativity to life.

If you have always bought play dough, please do give this recipe a try, you'll never buy it again! This no-cook recipe makes really lovely soft and pliable play dough, which if stored in an airtight container will also last for months.

I tend to make 3 colours at a time (a colour for each child!). The recipe below is based on quantities for 1 colour, so if you're doing multiple colours, it's easiest to follow the recipe below in separate bowls.

For each colour, you will need:

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup of boiling water (you may need up to a full cup, but add gradually until it feels right)
  • a few drop of food colouring

To make

  1. First combine the flour, cream of tartar, salt and oil in a bowl.
  2. In a separate cup, mix the food colouring into the boiling water
  3. Add the coloured boiling water to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture combines into a nice sticky dough.
  4. Leave the mixture to cool
  5. Once cooled, knead the dough for a few minutes which will make the dough the perfect consistency.

This whole process takes less than 10 minutes and will keep the children entertained for hours, over and over again. Honestly give it a go, it really is so easy....
