What is a Pikler Triangle?
Over a century ago, Dr. Emmi Pikler, a Hungarian paediatrician, created the Pikler Triangle. Usually made of natural materials, especially wood (although not always), the Pikler triangle strives to help children develop both their gross motor skills and spatial awareness. Furthermore, it can be used by babies and children of all ages (up to certain weight limits).
The traditional Pikler triangle climbing toy is pyramid-shaped, with specially designed ladder-style rungs on each side for children to climb. Being open on the inside, the triangle (or newly shaped snake ladders) cleverly lets little ones explore the structure. From different levels and all angles, in fact. Additionally, many of our wooden Montessori climbers are available in either beige or chocolate.
Pikler style climbing sets include accessories that either attach to or are meant to be used with the triangle/snake/arch ladder. For example, ramps, slide boards, nets and swings. Specifically to engage little ones in whole body play. Like the amazing 3in1 Triangle Ladder with Net and Slide Board Ramp.
Types of Montessori Climbing Toys

When should you introduce a Montessori climber?
Montessori climbing toys and Pikler triangles are wonderful for preschoolers and toddlers but also are generally suitable for babies as early as 6 months. In fact, as soon as your baby begins crawling and pulling up.
With their wide, stable bases, Pikler Triangles and Snake Ladders make splendid practice climbers. Plus as little ones grow and get stronger, improving their balance and gaining confidence, you can add accessories to ensure that children remain engaged, challenged and entertained.
Obviously, younger ages will require closer proximity to an adult so you may want to sit on the floor near your baby while they play. Similarly, do ensure to consult the product manufacturer’s age guidelines and maintain close supervision when your child is using their climbing toy.
